Resene Broadwall Prep and Seal

Product Description

Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal is a high build basecoat designed for roller application over stopped and jointed wall systems. It equalises surface porosities; smoothes minor surface irregularities; minimises textural differences; seals the surface and provides a perfect base for subsequent Resene finishes. Is a key element to achieving a level 5 finish on paperfaced plasterboard.

Technical and Environmental Benefits

Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal has been certified by Environmental Choice NZ as well as independently reviewed by EnviroSpec for its points contribution potential in Green Star NZ and Homestar building rating systems.

Unwanted paint and paint containers can be returned to the Resene PaintWise paint and paint packaging recovery programme. Returns are donated to community groups, sent to solvent recovery, packaging is recycled and other paint goes into covering graffiti and research on alternative uses. See link to Resene PaintWise.

Additional benefits include:

• Good adhesion to MDF, Pine, stoppings and finishing compounds.
• High build surfacer, which does not require sealing prior to application of Resene waterborne finishes.
• Sandable.
• Surface reinstatement after stripping wallpaper.
• Upgrade level of finish of existing painted walls.
• An Environmental Choice approved product.

Products must meet specific criteria (e.g. Paint VOC emissions, carpets, etc)
Products may help achieve points by their very nature, if they are specified and included in the design in accordance with Green Star NZ requirements (e.g. bicycle racks)
Products may help achieve an outcome but they must be used in a specific manner (e.g. lightingcontrol and zoning systems) OR this product can contribute towards the outcome but many other products or factor influence that same outcome (e.g. Potable Water Calculator)

Manufacturers and Suppliers

Resene started its quest towards more sustainable practices in the 1950s when it introduced waterborne paint and created a whole range of waterborne innovations. The Comapny claims that sustainability and reducing environmental impact simply forms part of it's heritage.

Reaffirming its commitment towards the environment in 1996 by becoming the first New Zealand paint company to offer an extensive range of Environmental Choice approved products, Resene has since continued innovating in this space and critically evaluates key raw materials and pays a premium for ingredients that are assessed as having less impact on the environment. In 2007 Resene Zylone Sheen VOC Free was introduced, and more recently Non VOC tinters were introduced, offering all the benefits of the decorative products without adding unwanted VOCs.

While its Environmental Choice paints are 'green', Resene describes its technology as 'cool'. The Cool Colours range provides exterior paints formulated to reflect solar radiation that would normally be absorbed. This is claimed to reduce substrate stress, improve paint longevity, and can help reduce heat absorption through building fabric which in turn could mean less air conditioning requirements if used as part of the overall building design strategy.

Resene also operates the PaintWise recycling programme, which includes a "world-first" mobile paint collection and recovery vehicle, allowing old paint or packaging (of any brand) to be returned. The company prides itself in the knowledge that hundreds of thousands of cans have already been returned with paint donations going to community group projects all over the country and to cover unwanted graffiti.

Application and Purpose

Typical uses
• Air dry (polymer based) stoppings and finishing compounds
• Gypsum based stoppings and finishing compounds
• MDF
• Paperfaced plasterboard
• Pine

Application:
• Apply using a PAL Hi Solids sleeve or brush (touch up or cutting in).
• Apply at the recommended spreading rate and lay off top to bottom overlapping a minimum of 50% minimum to give a uniform finish.
• Allow to dry before sanding (zinc stearate 180-220 grit). Ease of sanding will decrease as Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal approaches full cure. Remove sanding dust residues by a thorough wipe with a damp sponge.

Limitations
1. Not designed to fill large gaps or cracks (use an appropriate stopping or finishing compound).
2. Not designed to block stains.
3. Do not apply at temperatures below 10°C or when it is liable to drop below 10°C during the drying period.
4. Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal is designed to be overcoated with Resene waterborne finishes.
5. Not recommended for exterior use.

Installation and Maintenance

Resene products are guaranteed to provide film integrity and adhesion for the expected life of the paint system. See the link for a full copy of the Resene Promise of quality, which includes details of the expected paint system life.

Maintenance: Avoid cleaning the paint finish until at least four weeks after application time to ensure it has had sufficient time to fully develop its properties. Keep any cleaning to a minimum to avoid damaging the paint film. Follow the care and cleaning instructions in the Resene Caring for your paint finish brochure.
